| Using an Excel spreadsheet to help in the search for a magic
T-hexagon, the following was the first one to be found.

This configuration has a inner total of 25 with the purple and blue
triangles totalling 50.
After finding this first example, it became clear that there would be
many more that could be found. Slowly, the configurations were located,
not by programming, but with a lot of help from an Excel spreadsheet
that kept all totals and located what combinations could be tried.
Eventually, a complete set of yellow totals has been found. That is, we
have magic T-hexagons of side 2 for all interior totals between 21 and
64. Here are the ones for these two limiting totals:

Interior Total = 21 |

Interior Total = 64 |
Thus far, 40 different magic T-hexagons of side 2 have been located.
Because of the ease with which they were found, it seems most likely
that these 40 will only be representatives of the total number of
possibilities. This is because the combination of numbers that can be
used to make an interior total gets larger and larger as we move up from 21.
The Search is on!
Recently, I was contacted by David
King about searching for magic T-hexagons of side 2. As a result
David has developed a search algorithm and the outcomes are seriously
dramatic. We hope to be able to report on the investigations soon, and
they will be surprizing! |
