Coin Mat for the IWB

Teachers constantly asked for Interactive Whiteboard software that used Australian coins and this was our response, a package using coin art work provided to us by the Australian Mint.

There are many ways of using the software to support the numeracy block. It can be used:

as the basis for mental routines at many levels
to model processes such as adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing money amounts and giving change
to model equivalence of coins and for coin identification
subtilising and combining like coins for ease of counting
for class or small group games such as guess my coins

Students can use actual coins as they interact with the activities making the activities accessible to the younger students and those needing extra support.

Unlike many coin software packages the Coin Mat has many extra features, such as:

a Show Value button that can be switched on or off as required and can also be used as a checker after coins have been dragged onto the screen
a Change Coin button for breaking amounts in to appropriate denominations when working out how to give change giving.
a hand that can be activated to model change giving and when games
a Reset button that very quickly clears the screen
coins that can be dragged onto the screen and counted in 5s, 10s, 20s or 50s.

The software is accompanied by a Teacher's Guide that details 15 mental routines, activities, lesson plans and games that can be used with a wide range of ages.
