Dice Strings for the IWB

Teachers love this Interactive Whiteboard software with its focus on mental addition strategies . As with many of our other software products this software opens with a teacher set up screen. It instantly allows teachers to:

• switch on the mental addition strategies that they have already taught and want to use in the session
• select dice that will show 1– 6 or 1 – 9 depending on their learners
• select to play with 2 to 6 dice at any one time

This software package is designed to provide fun practice with the mental computation strategies: count on, double, rainbow facts, near double, friendly numbers, bridge through ten and their related secret codes.

The main screen has a playing area where the dice roll noisily into the Throw box. The dice can then be dragged into the Arrange box and positioned to make them easy to add. The Secret Codes are dragged from the sidebar into place and the steps for adding written on the screen. Of course there may be several ways of arranging the strings of dice so a Restore button puts the dice back in the Throw box, allowing other students to come and show their thinking. Strategies can be compared and discussed in terms of their efficiency, reliability and personal preference. In particular, this software works really well for introducing the open number line as a method of recording the steps of an addition – it makes the thinking so visible. The Teacher Guide includes 15 mental routines and activities with teacher notes and games that each make use of this software and the strategies presented.
