Place Value to 1 000 000

The new Australian Curriculum: Mathematics has brought forward the age at which students are expected to have place value of large numbers. In our classroom activities we find that many Grade 6 and even Grade 7 students are still struggling to reach a deep understanding of place value to 1 000 let alone larger numbers. We also find that many students cannot, or do not, read large numbers correctly or with understanding. Rather they rattle them off like a string of telephone numbers. And we asked ourselves how on earth busy teachers are going to have the time or sometimes the expertise to put a unit of work related to place value together. Could we do it we wondered. That became our goal for several weeks and it fully challenged us. The result is that we now have a unit of work which directly relates to place value to 1 000 000. This book has been extremely well received by teachers who comment that within a very short space of time playing the games included in the book the students can and do read large numbers correctly and begin to refine their understanding of large numbers. In fact so popular has the Traffic Lights Game been that we have now made in into an app.

The book includes the overview, mental routines, problematised situations, games and IWB support materials. We have not put a Grade level on the cover though because we feel that currently most Grade 6 and 7 students would benefit from it and most Year 4 classes will not yet be ready for it. In the transitional phase to implementing the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics teachers will need to use their own discretion about where to pitch this unit of work.
